Welcome to Room 2!
My name is Heather Gillis and I will be your child’s Grade 2 teacher this year. I look forward to sharing in your child’s learning while we discover new concepts and learn together.
Website/Communication:
You can access the Roland Michener website and find school information using the link below:
http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/RolandMichener/Pages/default.aspx
Click on the “Teaching and Learning” tab, then “Classes and Departments”. We are Room 2.
You will find important dates, reminders, photos, school and classroom information. Please refer to it regularly. If you receive blue forms, please return to school.
If you need to contact me, please feel free to drop in, phone (403) 777-8240 or email [email protected]
Snack and Lunch:
Some children are allergic to peanuts and nuts, please avoid sending them in snacks and lunches.
Snack: In addition to lunch, your child needs to come to school with a snack every day. The ideal snack is something that is small enough to fit in the palm of your child’s hand. Some examples of healthy, ready to eat snacks are:
- yogurt (with a spoon) or yogurt tubes - cheese or cheese strings
- crackers - ready to eat fruit (already cut or peeled, if needed)
- veggies - granola bars (not chocolate-coated)
Lunch: If your child attends the RMS lunch program, please pack a healthy lunch. Please note that the lunchroom does not have microwaves.
Water:
Children are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to keep at their desk. Bottles will be sent home at the end of every week so they can be washed and returned the following week, to prevent the build up of bacteria and the spreading of germs.
Indoor Shoes:
Every student must have a pair of INDOOR RUNNING SHOES that are appropriate for participation in gym activities. Please do not send your child with shoelaces unless your child is able to tie them. This is extremely important for your child’s safety and independence. Velcro or lock laces are ideal!
Home Reading:
Research has proven that only 10 minutes of reading a night can dramatically improve your child’s literacy! Every child will have a Raz-Kids reading account (which can be found on the ‘links’ page of the Room 8 website) and access to school library books. Your child may also bring home Word Drills. They are to practice and new drills will be sent home when they are mastered.
Ideas for further activities at home:
- Play card and board games
- Check our links page for some great websites to promote your child’s learning.
- Visit the Calgary Public Library. All Calgary residents can have a FREE Calgary Library Card.
- While preparing snacks and meals, let your child help while counting and dividing things into groups such as pieces of cheese, crackers, any fruits or veggies, raisins etc.
- Use play-dough to shape and create letters and numbers and practice spelling words while strengthening your child’s hand muscles (helps in printing).
Labeling:
To avoid losing clothing, shoes and lunchboxes, please write your child’s name inside their belongings with permanent marker.
Weather Considerations:
We go outside several times every day no matter the weather unless it is -20 degrees Celsius or colder. This means we go out in rain, wind, snow and sunshine so please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately every day.
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Heather Gillis
